Bruna Caniglia

Biography

The study of her own reflected image.

Reviews

“Bruna Caniglia's research focuses on her reflected image. She is inspired by artists, such as Andy Warhol and Urs Luetthi, who have made their own body the object of their art. Her self-portraits, on dark ground, between nature and unnatural, explore the human unease.”

Giovanni Criscione · INpress

“…Bruna Caniglia's (baroque or warholian?) self-portraits, introspective variations on the body…”

Giuseppe Pitrolo

Biography · English

Bruna Caniglia was born in Catania on the 4th of December 1985.

In 2003 she obtained her diploma at the artistic high school “Filippo Brunelleschi” in Acireale. In 2007 she enrolled at the Academy of Art and Restoration Abadir in S. Agata li Battiati (CT), where she completed her studies in February 2011.

It was during these years, guided by the artists Piero Zuccaro and Giuseppe Puglisi, that she began a painting whose search for colour and light grew ever slower and more meditated, coming to know and explore details and figurative aspects in which matter reveals itself as hinted at, subtle yet intensely real.

In 2016 she enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, where she earned a specialist MA in painting. From an initially purely figurative approach — conducted with extraordinary technique and an innate gift for drawing — Bruna has since moved to a phase in which ever-present reality is translated through the search for the evocative qualities of the painterly material. Thus, for example, a sea becomes a mobile surface upon which expressive forces of suggestive impact animate; the visible leaves traces to be rejoined, shadows to be focused, states of mind interwoven in a current of living tension. A painting — that of Bruna Caniglia — which moves on the dimension of pure linguistic essentiality, in that ability to fuse representation and impalpable dream.
